Establishing a Budget

Establishing a budget is the perfect way to cut back on costs and take a good look at personal finances to determine where exactly money is going, how it is being spent and seeing places where it can be managed more efficiently. For those who are not used to having a budget, it may seem a bit tricky but there are some simple tricks to follow to make it easy.

Calculate Expenses

The first step to establishing a budget is to calculate all expenses and determine what the monthly totals are. While most people are quick to add up their big expenses such as their rent, mortgage or car payment, often times smaller expenses such as vehicle maintenance are forgotten. Be sure to include a small portion for miscellaneous expenses or unexpected expenses as well.

Determine Total Income and Compare it to Expenses

Once expenses have been added together, it is time to add up the total income to see how the two compare. Many people are alarmed to find out that they are either making more than they originally thought or spending more than they thought. If the total amount of expenses is more than the income, then it can be a big wake-up call.

Determine What Can Be Cut Out

After the costs and income have been totalled, look at the expenses and start determining what expenses can be cut out. Go for the obvious expenses such as eating out, cable channels that are never watched or similar costs. Determine how much it will save, and put that money into a savings account for emergencies.
